Forms and States of Mind -
An Interpersonal Approach to Painting
Proffesor Jonathan Green
Professor of Child Psychiatry, University of Manchester
This lecture is based on the idea that paintings carry much of their cultural power by being ways of embodying states of mind in physical material. It follows that the understanding we have of how people infer mental states in others can alsobe used to address how we respond to visual art: our facility for inferring mental states can help us understand paintings.

Promiscuity in the Evolution of Species
Professor Tim Birkhead
Professor of Behavioural Ecology, Sheffield University
Birds were once thought to be models of monogamy, but an individual view of selection together with research using molecular techniques over the last 30 years has revealed that most birds are in fact promiscuous, and extra-pair paternity is common. Promiscuity has resulted in the evolution of a remarkable suit of reproductive traits in birds and other animals, that were previously unexplained. Promiscuity may also play an important role in the evolution of animal species

Christmas Jazz
With an introduction by Mike Hall, Head of Jazz Studies, Royal Northern College of Music.
Last year’s ‘Nearly Christmas Event’ was hailed as such a success that we’re going to try it again - but this time with a little difference. Members and their guests are invited to ‘Christmas Jazz with the Lit & Phil’. Held once again at the Royal Northern College of Music we will be welcomed with Mulled Wine, Mince Pies and a gentle background rhythm then hear something of the history of jazz - where it’s been and perhaps where it’s going to.
